Functional Groups
Note: This is a learning resource and may simplify some concepts for educational
purposes.
Why Functional Groups Matter
- They determine chemical reactivity (how the molecule behaves).
- They affect polarity and solubility (whether it dissolves in water or oil).
- They influence biological activity (how drugs interact with the body).
What are Functional Groups?
Functional groups are specific groups of atoms within molecules that are responsible for the characteristic chemical reactions of those molecules. The same functional group will undergo the same or similar chemical reactions regardless of the size of the molecule it is a part of.
1. Hydrocarbons
Arenes (Aromatic)
Cyclic structures like Benzene with stabilized electron rings.

2. Halogen-Containing
Alkyl Halides (R-X)
Alkane with a halogen substituent (where X = F, Cl, Br, or I).
Example: View Alkyl Halides
3. Oxygen-Containing
4. Nitrogen-Containing
5. Sulfur-Containing
6. Phosphorus-Containing
